The terminal in its current form is the result of a £6m redevelopment programme over the last two years that has delivered a heavy load out quay, new roads and hardstanding, cranes and warehouse improvements.

Bates is a strategic site is located on the south shore of the River Blyth Estuary to the north of Blyth town centre. The site is currently in use as Port operational land.
Access can be made from either Regent Street (B1329) or Cowpen Road (A193) which leads onto the A189 dual carriageway and from there to the national motorway network.
